How we form an image in front of your eyes

There are a number of ways to form an image: from laser beam scanners to spatial light modulators such as DMDs – digital mirrored devices and LCoS – liquid crystal on silicon, and self-emitting displays, such as MicroLED and MicroOLED. WaveOptics’ research focusses on DMDs, LCoS and MicroLED.

DMDs

Our preferred DMD type is the DLP (digital light processor) from Texas Instruments. We choose DMDs because they are a well proven technology, available for mass production and very light efficient.

LCoS

LCoS offer a range of benefits compared to DMDs, predominantly, the smaller pixel size enables greater pixel density which results in a smaller projector. They are also lower cost to produce. We have in-house capability for even higher efficiency LCoS projectors which are the smallest on the market.

MicroLED

MicroLEDs offer huge potential but currently are available in green only, whereas the market requires full colour, at the required brightness.

Our Projector models

We have extensive in-house design and production capabilities for our projectors. We offer models available in DMD and LCoS and we have designed a demonstrator using MicroLED.

How do WaveOptics Projectors work?
AR wearables, such as smart glasses, enable users to see digital images overlaid on top of the real world. There are two key elements that allow these images to be seen – a light source such as a minute projector and a means of transferring the image from the projector into the user’s eyes.
