Waveguides

WaveOptics’ waveguides are transparent optical components for full colour, near-eye augmented reality displays. Currently available in 25˚ and 40˚ field of view formats, the waveguides are formed from glass with precision nano-structures. WaveOptics waveguides are the key component used to overlay high resolution computer generated images over the real world.

A light engine generates images, which are coupled into a small input region. The light is transmitted along the WaveOptics waveguide (via total internal reflection) towards the output region where it is guided towards the eye.

WaveOptics patented 2D pupil expansion allows a small light engine to support an instantly immersive viewing experience via a large eye-box. Our waveguides therefore enable small and light commercial AR devices that can accommodate different head sizes and eye separations without any manual adjustments.

Customisation Programs:
Given the unique architecture of WaveOptics’ approach, various elements of the waveguide can be customised to meet specific customer applications. This can include altering the physical outline of the standard waveguide as well as reorientation of input and output structure locations and sizes.

WaveOptics Module Program

The WaveOptics Module Program gives customers early and easy access to waveguide and augmented reality (AR) technology.

LCOS proto module also available

Customers are supplied with 40° waveguides and light engines, pre-aligned and mounted on a lightweight frame. Associated electronics are also provided.

The Module Program can be tailored to suit customers who are looking to:

  • Evaluate waveguides and waveguide development
  • Source AR modules for faster prototyping
  • Source AR modules for the production of AR products

Image convergence and focal point are pre-aligned to a standard configuration. This can potentially be re-specified depending on the requirement and commercial model.

Binocular Components

2x waveguide assemblies. One left, one right.
2x WaveOptics light engines. One left, one right.
1x chassis assembly connecting left to right.
1x driver board / electronics.

Binocular Alignment

Supplied with the focal plane of the virtual image set to infinity.
Convergence between left and right eye will be set to 4 meters.

Monocular

Designed to enable use as a monocular module, details can be provided for specific applications.

Integration Options

Module can be integrated into new or existing systems by connecting directly to the light engine modules. WaveOptics can supply information necessary to facilitate this.

Large Eye-box

Allows a large variation in the viewing position without vignetting (cropping).

Tolerant of wide variations in human head/eye geometry.

Allows large eye relief and designs that can fit over conventional spectacles and does not require cumbersome “per-user” calibration.

Developer Kits

WaveOptics’ Developer Kits are available as part of our module program. We also made our 3D demo content available (.apk files) for download. There are two files available - one for our 25° Field of View demo and the other for our 40° Field of View demo. These files are designed for use on an android operating system.
