Waveguide Modelling Engineer

Working with an inter-disciplinary team, this team looks at new research activities while considering the manufacturing capability in an R&D environment.

The role:

  • This will be an opportunity to work in our talented R&D team that is focussing on new Research and Process for WaveOptics optical displays
  • Our team combines modelling, Fabrication and design to deploy cutting edge technology
  • Based in our custom-built open plan office in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
  • You will apply in-house optical modelling techniques for development of novel and alternative waveguide designs
  • Research and develop new optical modelling approaches
  • Correlate modelled with experimental measurements to improve the fidelity and predictive power of models
  • Incorporate data from physical measurements of nanostructures and materials into models (from SEM, AFM, Ellipsometry, Diffraction Measurements, etc.)
  • Provide support to the team members working with waveguide manufacturing and optical testing to verify theoretical hypothesis with modelling

Essential:

  • PhD in mathematics, physics, or engineering
  • Expertise in wave or diffractive optics modelling and verification techniques (FDTD, FEM, RCWA/FMM etc.), or solid knowledge of electromagnetic theory
  • Experience of incorporating nano-characterisation results (e.g. SEM /AFM) into numerical models to bring them closer to the experimental performance
  • Numerical analysis and visualization of data (from modelling and experiments) using tools such as MATLAB or the Scientific Python stack, etc
  • Algorithm development, numerical optimisation, and scripting skills (using Python or MATLAB)
  • Strong verbal / written communication and reasoning skills, experience of working with external partners and customers
  • Good Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to short timescales

Bonus:

  • Hands on experience with nano-characterisation such as SEM, AFM, knowledge of White Light Interferometry, Ellipsometry, FTIR
  • Experience with optical measurements, e.g. diffraction gratings, characterization of displays and optical systems performance, etc
