Waveguide Engineer

This is an opportunity that allows you to transition from innovative research to a revenue generating product.

Are you a PHD graduate or an experience optical engineer with diffractive optics experience? This is an exciting opportunity to work with world class scientists in the world of AR displays.

The role:

  • WaveOptics is a fast moving start up and due to further R&D activities and customer interest we are growing our R&D Waveguide team
  • You will be based in our office in Abingdon, Oxfordshire which has been equipped with lab space and demo rooms
  • You will be working within the Product & Capabilities team who are responsible for new designs and modelling our Waveguide Optical displays and exploring new modelling techniques
  • Part of key team designing and debugging our AR waveguide products, from specification through to release to initial manufacture to bring up and debug
  • Specification and coding of automation software to allow efficient modelling of performance of our advanced photonic crystal surface-relief grating optics
  • Analysis of design windows for operation to-specification and interfacing to our Operations team in order to validate the measured performance vs. model
  • This position will offer a variety of work including Optical design, modelling, experimental configuration and characterisation (50% modelling, 50% optical test)
  • You will keep updated on research activities internally & externally to empower you to develop innovative products to the AR market

Essential:

  • Strong BSc or higher-level degree in Physics or related Optical sciences
  • Experience with diffractive optical design or diffractive structures and good knowledge of optics from either research or industry
  • Expertise in wave or diffractive optics modelling and verification techniques (FDTD, FEM, RCWA/FMM etc.), or solid knowledge of electromagnetic theory
  • Numerical analysis and visualization of data (from modelling and experiments) using tools such as MATLAB or the Scientific Python stack, etc
  • Algorithm development, numerical optimisation, and scripting skills (using Python or MATLAB)
  • Experience with hands on optical setup and testing and Labview
  • Strong verbal / written communication and reasoning skills, experience of working with external partners and customers
  • Good Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to short timescales
  • Ability to work alone and as a team
  • Experience with optical measurements, e.g. diffraction gratings, characterization of displays and optical systems performance, etc

Bonus:

  • Experience with Zemax or raytracing
  • Experience of incorporating nano-characterisation results (e.g. SEM /AFM) into numerical models to bring them closer to the experimental performance
