The role:

  • This is an opportunity that allows you to transition from innovative research to a revenue generating product
  • Reporting to the Head of Products & Capabilities, based in our office and lab space in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, you will be working within the product & capabilities team who are responsible for new designs and modelling our waveguide optical displays and exploring new modelling techniques
  • As a Waveguide Engineer you will be part of our R&D team working on future innovation and delivering innovative products to the AR market
  • Part of key team designing and debugging our AR waveguide products, from specification through to release to initial manufacture to bring up and debug
  • Specification and coding of automation software to allow efficient modelling of performance of our advanced photonic crystal surface-relief grating optics
  • Analysis of design windows for operation to-specification and interfacing to our Operations team in order to validate the measured performance vs. model
  • Explore and design new optical structures to enhance the performance of our AR waveguide
  • Keeping updated on research activities internally and externally

What we need to see:

  • PhD in Physics, Applied Math or strong industrial experience in related Optical sciences
  • Experience with diffractive optical design or diffractive structures and good knowledge of optics from either research or industry
  • Expertise in wave or diffractive optics modelling Fourier optics and verification techniques (FDTD, FEM, RCWA/FMM etc.), or solid knowledge of electromagnetic theory
  • Numerical analysis and visualization of data (from modelling and experiments) using tools such as MATLAB or the Scientific Python stack, etc
  • Algorithm development, numerical optimisation, and scripting skills (using Python or MATLAB)
  • Strong verbal / written communication and reasoning skills, experience of working with external partners and customers
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to short timescales

Desirable:

  • Inverse problems in optics, e.g. nanostructure synthesis
  • Experience in optimization algorithms, e.g. Genetic algorithms, particle swarm
  • Experience in design of diffraction gratings, photonic crystals or Metasurfaces
