Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

The role : 

• Reporting to the  Head of Mechanical Design based in our new custom-built office in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
• You will be heavily involved in the hands-on development of prototype head mounted opto-mechanical systems  for the AR market  which includes glass imprinted nano-structured Waveguides  and miniature  Light  Engines
• You will create  mechanical design  solutions for  complex optical rigs and fixtures  to test and calibrate the Waveguides and Light Engines
• This is an opportunity to be involved in both in depth design, integration and delivery of products based on classical imaging optical systems in  both  glass and plastic
• You will have great communication skills in order to capture customer requirements, while interfacing with  Optical and Industrial  Designers, delivering practical yet aesthetics design  solutions
• Ownership of technical project delivery for the  mechanical discipline, plus integration with Electrical and Optical Designer

What we like to see :

• Minimum of 5  years’ experience  in design of high specification  consumer  products  or  specialist optical equipment
• Familiar with Kinematic design / alignment concepts for opto-mechanical design
• First hand experience in designing and delivering  complex  miniature  opto-mechanical  products
• Design for high volume manufacturing processes such as injection moulding and vacuum casting, machining etc
• Highly independent – capable of prioritising goals, planning projects and tracking themselves against the plan
• Practical workshop skills for development of prototype systems and assembly of first articles and test fixtures
• Excellent communication skills to ensure clear liaison within the team as well as with suppliers and customers
• Experience delivering innovative and imaginative solutions to problems
• Continuously willing to learn with a very strong attention to detail

Bonus :

• Optomechanical experience would be an advantage, however we will also consider a strong mechanical engineering background with the appetite to learn
• Specific experience in HeadsUpDisplays, mobile phones or displays is preferred
• Experience with NPI would be an advantage
